Sydney made it into Rehab today! They put her right to work. After sitting her up, they helped her grab her legs and pull them into a frog position; and then helped her pull on some stylish pajama pants. Yay! No more immodest hospital gowns! To celebrate, they helped her get into a wheelchair and take a tour of the rehab floor. Pretty exciting!

She met Dr. Dodds, and he explained his philosophy that after she develops enough strength to take care of basic tasks on her own, she will head home. She could then continue some therapy to strengthen her legs on an outpatient basis. He estimates her being there between 2-4 weeks; but we will take one day at a time and see what happens.

In rehab she gets 3 hours of therapy a day: 1.5 hours of physical therapy, and 1.5 hours of occupational therapy (life skills). Right now these are broken into 30 minute sessions. After therapy, she is tuckered out and falls fast asleep (I'm sure the pain meds help to knock her out as well). We have hung up all the posters and cards in her room – it is looking pretty cute!

When I was gathering some things from Sydney's room I saw a book on top of her bedside stand that was given to her at Junior Miss. It is called “The Impossible Just Takes a Little Longer”. What an appropriate motto!

We'll see what tomorrow brings!

Denine,
Thank you so much for the daily updates. We feel so helpless being here in Oregon, and not closer to help out. We pray for Sydney and all of you each day. We want you all to know of our love and concern. We know with God, all things are possible. Many hugs to Sydney from her Oregon Cousins, and her Aunt and Uncle. We hope to be able to see you soon!! Hi Sydney!!
I just wanted to let you know that you amaze me with how hard you work and how positive you are! Working at a Physical Therapy clinic, I've seen that those patients who are so committed and optimistic are the ones that reach amazing milestones quickly and honestly achieve the impossible. There's this one boy that comes in that blows me away. He has cancer, and you can tell he has been through just about everything. He had a knee surgery and is learning to walk again, and he is SO HAPPY and excited when he gets to another point like walking a few steps. And it has a huge impact on those who are working with you too, it makes the whole atmosphere good and motivates them as well. So hang in there! You're such a good example for everyone! I'd love to know when I can come visit, as long as you're up to it :) have a good weekend! :)

Sydney!!
Ah, how I miss your smiling face at Lone Peak. You are such a joy - thank you for always being positive and happy! You are such a pleasure to be around.
You have been so strong throughout all of this. When your mom describes you being "excited" about things like sitting up and therapy, at first it's a sort of "Really? Excited in that situation?" And then I just remind myself "Oh yeah - it's Sydney. Of COURSE she is happy, excited, and positive. As always." You are so amazing.
On behalf of student council, I can say we'd love to come visit you (just a few of us) when you're doing well enough. So will you let us know when you're up to it?
Ah. You are magnificent.
-Anna.

Thank you SO SO much for these daily updates of Sydney. I've been thinking about her and praying nonstop since I heard the news. It's such a miracle that she's come so far in such little time. I love her and am so so proud of her for being so strong and positive through all this!
My fall break is October 15-16 and I was thinking about driving up to visit Sydney. Would that be too soon, or would that work out? I miss her DEARLY and fall break seems like the perfect time to come visit. Let me know if that's possible. Thanks!
